Two New CALLE 13 Singles Speak Out On Immigration And Deadly/Unwarranted Police Shootings
Never hesitant to speak their mind and already hailed by press as "a new
generation of outspoken musical revolutionaries" CALLE 13 are unleashing two of their most confrontational songs yet. This week, "Pal Norte" (Going North) -the third single from the duo's chart-topping and appropriately named current album Residente o Visitante - has been sent to Latin radio across the U.S. A powerful duet with critically beloved Latin hip-hop outfit ORISHAS, the song has been called "a biting indictment of immigration policy in the Americas" that "highlights the harsh realities that immigrants are faced with when coming to the U.S."
Simultaneously, Calle 13 has continued their ability to record fast
lyrical indictments that attack abusive authority in the group's native
Puerto Rico. Having previously laid down a verbal challenge to the
actions of the FBI on the island, Calle 13 last week began sharing free
copies (personally distributing over 2,00 discs) of the newly recorded
reactionary track "Tributo a la Policia". The unforgiving song is in
reaction to the incendiary incident in which a Puerto Rican police
officer was videotaped fatally shooting unarmed man Miguel Caceres Cruz.
The event took place within hours of Calle 13 also learning that the
autopsy report of a recently killed friend also detailed an unjustified
police shooting.
While many artists fear the commercial reaction of confronting
authority, Calle 13 are obviously striking a chord as they were once
again recognized by industry peers today with word that the
half-brothers had received FOUR LATIN GRAMMY nominations for Residente o
Visitane - making them once again one of the most nominated artists of
the year. The nominations for Album of the Year - Best Urban Music Album
- Best Urban Song ("Pal Norte") and Best Music Video ("Tango del
Pecado") of course adds to their tally of having WON three Latin Grammy
Awards last year - garnering Best New Artist, Best Urban Album, and Best
Video.
