The colonial towns of San Angel and Coyoacan (which gets its name from the Aztec words for “Place of the Coyotes”) are located south and southwest of the metropolis of Mexico City, Mexico. Home to many artists and writers, two of the area’s most famous past residents include Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo.
Famed Mexican artist Frida Kahlo was born in the picturesque Coyoacan. She lived most of her life there. She was raised in a cornflower blue colored house that she made famous. Today it serves as the Museo Frida Kahlo (Londres 247, Coyoacan). Fellow Mexican artist Diego Rivera, one of Los Tres Grandes, asked for Frida Kahlo’s hand in marriage in the blue house.
They were married in 1929. Diego Rivera's philandering led to their divorce in 1939, but a year later, Frida and Diego were remarried.

On Diego’s return from the United States in the early 1930s, he commissioned one of Mexico’s most respected architects and artist Juan O’Gorman to design and build personal studios for the artistic couple. Finished in 1932 the dual studios were connected by a catwalk bridge which Frida Kahlo used to take Diego his meals.

The smaller studio used by Frida Kahlo resulted in some of her most well known paintings including “The Two Fridas”.
