Every October the
government of Colombia sponsors “Hip Hop Al Parque” at Parque Simon Bolivar in
the city of Bogota, Colombia. This annual two day event is the largest hip-hop
gathering in Latin America, attracting close to 100,000 attendees. The Hip-Hop
festival brings in international acts from America (Psycho Realm, Immortal
Technique, Mobb Deep etc.) and Spain (NACH and Violadores Del Verso) and
features some of the best home grown talent from Colombia. Supporting the
underground movement, the event is free to the general public and attracts the
best b-boys crews, grafiteros, emcees, and deejays.
I was introduced to
DJ DAP by the well respected Colombian emcee MACKO. DJ DAP is one
of Bogota’s best hip-hop deejays, and was one of the featured deejays of Hip Hop
Al Parque 2009. After a night of partying at Mobb Deep’s official after party in
the Zona Rosa district, we became good friends.

DJ DAP is a big
fan of Latino Hip-Hop, studying the music of some of the best Latinos in the
game. He was starting to work on a DJ DAP mixed CD and asked me to shoot the
photography for the CD artwork since he was a fan of my photography.
We
scheduled a photo shoot in the picturesque pueblo of Chia, Colombia where I was
also introduced to DJ DHAGO.
One of DJ DAP’s favorite tracks features Los Angeles-based emcee DETANE
on a collaboration song titled “U GOT THE FIRE”.
DETANE is a well-know
Mexican emcee born in Guadalajara, Mexico and raised in the streets of Los
Angeles, California. He personifies the urban spirit of the Hip-Hop culture from
b-boying at the local park, graffiti bombing up the L.A. city blocks, and
spitting rhymes at underground shows. Even his past album covers featured
graffiti artists MEAR-1 and OG Abel, serving as a testament to his dedication to
the Hip-Hop movement, representing all elements in his music.

DJ DAP asked if I
could also film DETANE for a music video he wanted to put together for his new
mixed CD. DETANE and I got together over the summer. I filmed and photographed
him throughout Los Angeles and I sent the raw product back to Bogota, Colombia
via the Internet for processing. Where director Andres Ramos mixed his DJ DAP
footage in the Lab, and put the finishing touches on this new Colombian /
Mexican connection.
