Soul Skating: "How
We Live & Skate"
In
Hawaii the art of riding waves was once reserved only for Hawaiian royalty. Once
the Christian missionaries arrived to the Hawaiian Islands they started to ban
all Hawaiian traditions and surfing was prohibited. They considered surfing an
evil act and the Hawaiians spirit was broken.
Surfing was brought back
to life on the beaches of Waikiki, on the island of Oahu. Duke Paoa Kahanamoku,
Hawaii’s native son, grew up surfing the Waikiki waves. Duke helped introduce
surfing to California and Australia in the early 1900’s and is known as the
father of modern surfing.
The North Shore of Oahu became the Mecca of
surfing by the late fifties and early sixties, where the winter waves of Banzai
Pipeline, Sunset Beach, and Waimea Bay made legends of the surfers who dare
surfed the monster waves.
By the sixties surfing, had become a
commercialized multimillion dollar industry from the Hollywood movies, surf
music, magazines, to the international surf clothing brands.
In response
to the massive surf culture craze, there was a “Soul Surfer” movement - where
surfers respected the spirituality of wave riding and looked down upon surf
contest and the capitalistic surf industry.
Legendary soul surfers like
Pipeline’s Gerry Lopez expressed himself through his unity with the waves by
feeding off the energy of the ocean. He surfed Pipeline the way a painter
expresses his soul on canvas.
